Maidstone Borough Council News – Food Waste

On Monday 21st March 2011 Maidstone Borough Council announced the launch of a new food waste scheme at a local plant.

The official launch will be taking place next week and will include a tour of Blaise Farm, where the food is composted.  Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Ben Sherreard, said: “The service was rolled out at the end of January and it’s already proving a big success with more than 100 tonnes of food waste, per week, being sent for composting.”

Attending will be Cllr Sherreard; WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), who have invested £170,000 to help Maidstone Borough Council deliver the service; Kent Waste Partnership and Kent County Council who have helped fund the set-up of the service; New Earth Group, who run Blaise Farm composting facility and the council officers who have helped the delivery of the service.

Since the scheme was launched at the end of January more than 70% of households are using the new food waste scheme with more than 100 tonnes of food waste being sent for composting PER WEEK.  This waste would have usually have been put into the grey bins which have seen a decrease of 37% in the first four weeks of the new service.

This new scheme now means that Maidstone residents are able to recycle more than 60% of their weekly garbage.

Residents are encouraged to continue putting all paper, card, food and drink cans, aerosols, foil, yogurt post, margarine tubs and ice cream tubs into their green bins to be recycled.  Meanwhile items such as textiles, books, shoes and glass can be taken to local recycling points.

Cllr Sherreard added: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to residents for their support which has pushed Maidstone’s recycling rate to more than 40% already.”

So well done Maidstone Residents and if you would like any further information about recycling in Maidstone then please contact Maidstone Borough Council.
